When I started my architecture degree my initial passion was in contemporary house design located in large cities. There is something about architecture, or any type of arts, which attracts us to highly populated cities, where everything happens at your door step! It is so inspiring to live in these spaces which provide the latest of design, technology and innovation. Unfortunately a lot of problems are also found in these beautiful hubs. Problems such as over population, traffic jams, air pollution, visual pollution, real estate speculation, the high prices of goods and services and many other issues which don’t seem to bother you much when you are young. From growing up in a city with 20 million people I now enjoy a quieter time living in a small coastal city and with this change I also realized that my design inspirations are shifting from ‘city design’ having surrounding buildings as a context to ‘country design’ having the landscape as a context. My next post will gather my best inspirations of city houses but for now let’s see what nature and a single building can create in a vast space!

Landscape is such an amazing canvas to work with when you are creating a building. Is not everyday where trees, rocks, lake or a vast blue sky is part of a project brief.

The design possibilities in these type of sites are endless! Some prefer the traditional house design with the gabled roof, potentially with a contemporary look using new materials. Others prefer modern architecture with a flat roof and wide windows bringing the nature inside their homes. In either type of architecture the building has to pay an immense respect to the surroundings and nature.

Simplicity is the key for these successful buildings. The nature speaks for itself.
